Hashtags were created in 2007 as way to help users find and search for relevant, specific content. Fast forward to 2021 and now almost every social media platform encourages you to use them in your captions. For business owners, it allows you to draw attention, promote, organise, and connect with your target audience. If you aren’t already, it’s time to maximise hashtags!
What are some of the different types of hashtags?
Community Hashtags
Community hashtags connect like-minded users to your content. It is a great way to improve the searchability of your posts, gain followers, grow your community and connect with others. Community hashtags include what products or services you are offering, for example – #coffee #florist #hairextensions all fall under community hashtags. Other examples of community hashtags include location-based hashtags (#Sydney #Cronulla #Earlwood) and hashtags highlighting your niche in your industry (#familyphotographer #hairextensionsspecialist). It is important to incorporate a good mix of community hashtags.
Branded Hashtags
Branded hashtags are unique to your business, such as your business name #WiseUpMarketing. Every time someone clicks on your branded hashtag, they will come across all your posts. If you can encourage your customers to use your branded hashtags in their posts this is a great way to be discovered by new audiences.
Trending Hashtags
Trending Hashtags are hashtags based on national and/or global trends and conversations that are happening. Whilst it is great to jump on trending hashtags it’s important to also recognise if they are relevant and suitable for your brand. Trending hashtags can easily be found by searching ‘trending hashtags’ on Google. Be sure to do your research before incorporating trending hashtags into your post.
What are some key tips?
How to handle Multiple Hashtags
Treat your hashtags like keywords. Hashtags should be used to target your audience. Do your research and see what important, relevant hashtags your target audience are looking for. When using multiple hashtags (10 or more) try and place them in the comments section of your post. If you are going to incorporate multiple hashtags in your caption, be sure to only use relevant hashtags that suit your brand. If you have pasted a large hashtag block that includes key words that aren’t related to your brand in your caption this can deter people from your brand.
Keep Hashtags Relevant
Relevant hashtags increase your visibility and attracts new customers to your page. When you incorporate irrelevant hashtags, you can confuse your audience and turn them away from engaging with your business. Be sure to pick hashtags that are consistent with your brand and brand messaging. Be sure to always include your branded hashtags to make it easier for your audience to find you.
Research by Platform
On LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, if you type the desired hashtag into the search bar you can see how many people are using it. On both LinkedIn and Instagram, you can also follow a hashtag to see what content other people are posting using the hashtag! Be sure to search a few different (and relevant) hashtags to see what is trending!
