How to improve your Instagram Profile: small changes with big impacts

In today’s fast-paced social media world, Instagram stands out as a go-to platform for individuals, businesses, and influencers to showcase their talent, products, and services to the world.

Instagram’s primary advantage over other social media platforms is its visual nature. If you have a business that benefits from the design of your product or if you have a service that has a visibly noticeable result, then Instagram is the best platform to showcase your content.

However, the question is, how can we improve our Instagram results?

In this blog, we will talk you through how to make small changes to your Instagram account that will have big impacts overall.

Why Should Businesses Audit Their Instagram Work?

Are you a business owner who finds it hard to achieve the results you want with your Instagram marketing? Well, this could be the perfect opportunity to audit your account. Auditing your Instagram account allows you to take a step back and carefully look over every aspect of your profile to ensure it is at its full potential.

As we know, Instagram is always changing with new updates, therefore, taking time to review your work is crucial to map out your plan for its best way forward. While conducting an Instagram audit is not an easy task, it is a crucial step in identifying and addressing any areas that need improvement.

Audit Your Bio

Start your Instagram audit by looking at your bio. Your bio includes your profile picture, profile name, bio description, links, and contact information.

Think of your bio like the front window of a store. It is the first thing people see and your best chance to make a great impression on potential followers.

It’s also where you can tell them what your page is all about.

Choosing your Instagram Profile Picture: Logo or your face?

When it comes to picking the right profile picture for your Instagram account, the choice between using a logo or a personal photo can make a big difference.

For businesses, go with a logo:

  • If you are running a business account on Instagram, using a logo is the way to go.
  • Ensure that your logo is clear and easy to recognise.

For personal brands:

  • If your Instagram profile is all about you and your personal brand, using a photo of yourself is a good option to go with.
  • Ensure that it is a clear solo photo of yourself that comes across professional.

Profile Name

Your profile name, the bold text just below your profile picture is like gold dust. It is how potential followers discover you. So, you need to be smart about it.

Use a couple of keywords that describe who you are and what you do, something that your target audience is likely to search for on Instagram. This will help increase your chances of getting noticed.

On Instagram, you can pick a category to display under your profile name, for example, ‘’Public Figure’’, ‘’Advertising/Marketing’’ etc.

Choose your category wisely as certain Instagram features are only available to certain account types.

For example, if you are running a business account, you may not have access to the full music library for your reels due to copyright rules.

So, remember, choose carefully!

Bio Description

To determine what your value statement should include, you need to ask yourself, what am I offering to my followers?

Keep it simple, like ‘’I share X, Y and Z’’ or ‘’We provide X, Y, and Z services’’. Be very clear and to the point.

Instagram gives you four lines for your bio, however the fourth line is usually hidden until you or someone else click ‘more’. Try to make the fourth line important, but not too important if someone misses it.

Imagine your ideal followers and tailor your bio to attract them. Avoid making it generic, focus on who your target audience will be.

Audit Your Page Features

When it comes to Instagrams page features, you need to determine whether you’re using the correct features, and if you are using them the right way.

Instagram stories and highlights: Whether you post short or long stories, they are an amazing way to connect with your audience.

So, go back through your past stories and ask yourself, ‘’Is this showcasing a different side to my life/business that is not on my main feed?’’ From here, you should consider adding the stories that got the most engagement to your highlights. Create highlights that match your content and audience.

Reels, photos, and carousels:

When using the main feed features, such as reels, carousels, and photos, remember that quality plays a crucial role. Nobody wants to be looking at blurry photos or watching blurry videos, so make sure the content that you post is clear and of the highest quality.

Tip: In your Instagram app settings, look for ’Data usage and media quality’. Turn on ‘Upload at highest quality’. It’s usually off to save data.

Audit Your Followers

Going through your followers is another important step within your audit. When you check your followers, make sure to be honest with yourself. Remove any fake accounts or bought followers. This way, you are opening the door to real, natural growth and building genuine interactions on your account.

How to spot a fake account?

  • Zero followers
  • Zero or few posts
  • No profile picture
  • The account has a random username
  • Following a lot of other accounts
