Your Social Media Isn’t Broken. You Might Just Need a Better Strategy.

Your Social Media Isn’t Broken. You Might Just Need a Better Strategy.

Posting consistently but not seeing the likes, comments or enquiries you expected? Before you decide that “Instagram just isn’t working anymore” or that your audience isn’t interested, take a step back.

Your social media probably isn’t broken. Your strategy might just need a rethink.

For small businesses, social media can quickly become a cycle of creating a post, hitting publish and hoping it performs. But effective social media marketing isn’t just about how often you post. It’s about knowing why you’re posting, who you’re speaking to and what you want that content to achieve.

Stop Posting Just to Post

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is creating content without a clear purpose.

If your content calendar is filled with “post something on Tuesday” and “do a Reel on Friday”, it’s time to zoom out.

Every piece of content should have a job.

Maybe it’s designed to:

  • Build brand awareness
  • Educate your audience
  • Show your expertise
  • Build trust
  • Drive website traffic
  • Generate enquiries or sales
  • Encourage engagement

A strong social media content strategy balances different types of content rather than asking every post to sell something.

Know Who You’re Actually Talking To

You can have great content, but if it isn’t relevant to the people you’re trying to reach, it won’t do much.

Think beyond demographics. What does your ideal customer actually care about? What questions are they asking? What problems are they trying to solve? What would make them stop scrolling?

The best social media content feels like it was made for someone, not just about a business.

Your Strategy Should Follow Your Business Goals

Your social media strategy shouldn’t exist separately from the rest of your digital marketing strategy.

If your goal is to generate more leads, your content should make it easy for people to take the next step.

If you’re launching a new product, your content should build awareness and interest before asking people to buy.

If you’re trying to become known as an expert, your content should consistently share useful knowledge and demonstrate what you know.

The strategy starts with the goal , then the content follows.

And Yes, You Should Look at the Numbers

Likes aren’t the only way to measure whether your social media is working 👀

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has spoken about the importance of looking beyond likes when understanding how content performs. He has identified watch time, likes and sends as three of the key signals Instagram looks at when ranking content.

As Mosseri explained, “sends per reach” can be particularly useful for understanding whether your content is resonating beyond your existing audience.

So, what should you actually be looking at?

  • Watch time: Are people sticking around to watch your videos?
  • Likes: Is your content resonating with your existing audience?
  • Sends: Are people sharing your content with friends or potential customers?
  • Reach: How many people are discovering your content?
  • Website clicks: Is your social media encouraging people to take the next step?

Your social media analytics can tell you a lot about what your audience actually responds to.

If your educational Reels are getting lots of shares, that’s a pretty good sign your audience finds that content useful. If your behind-the-scenes videos are keeping people watching, don’t overlook them just because they aren’t your most polished posts.

Your analytics aren’t just numbers. They’re feedback.

A Better Strategy Doesn’t Mean More Work

Perhaps the biggest misconception about social media marketing is that you need to constantly create more content.

You don’t.

As Mosseri has pointed out, “more content is not necessarily better.” What matters is creating content that gives people a reason to stop, watch, engage or send it to someone else.

Instead of constantly asking, “What should we post next?”, look at what’s already working.

What are people watching? What are they sharing? What are they commenting on?

Then, do more of what your audience is telling you they want.

Because it’s not always about posting more.

It’s about making the content you create count.

A clear content strategy can help you plan ahead, repurpose ideas, understand what is working and stop staring at a blank screen wondering what to post.

So before you blame the algorithm, your followers or Instagram itself, ask yourself:

Do we actually have a social media strategy?

Because sometimes your social media isn’t broken.

It just needs a little more strategy behind it.
